This is a watercolour and gouache painting, with the disc in the centre created with gold ink and gold leaf. The two sharks depicted are lemon sharks, their gills flared.
In 'Degeneration', a cycle of almost identical lemon sharks is just starting to split, creating a fragmenting harmony. I wanted to draw attention to this fragmentation, the loss of connection between generations as each is born into an increasingly hostile world. It is about the beauty in nature, loss, and grief, at the subjection of these animals to a world they neither created nor deserve.
